OUR HINTERLAND

After we had been living in The Woodlands for more than 6 months we realised that there was something very special about where we had moved to. That naturally led us to to visiting the surrounding countryside and the nearby towns. Although we had lived in large towns most of our lives, we are from country origins and we get a real boost from seeing a field full of cows - even better if they are brahma or longhorns!

As we started to explore further from The Woodlands and Houston, we began to discover the charm of the older, surrounding towns many of which were settled by immigrants from Central Europe. They all have distinctive architectural styles, and their own uniqueness and pride in their history.

This is the southern end of Lake Conroe with reflections of the evening sunshine. It is crossed by Highway 105 that links the town of Montgomery with the City of Conroe. Let's begin in the town Montgomery - where the Texas flag has its origin.

Conroe has become a thriving, modern city but, as with most Texan cities, its downtown has interesting and historic buildings centered around the Courthouse. This walkway links two of the court buildings and many feet (including mine) have walked across here when called for Jury Duty.

Tomball is closest to where we live now. It was settled by German immigrants in the mid-1800s, and is a town with many traditions, including a German Heritage Festival in March each year.

The next phase of out Texas Journey took us in ever-widening spirals outwards from The Woodands.
